Celebrated Danish architect Henning Larsen dies at home in Copenhagen at age of 87

Henning Larsen, founder of the self-titled Henning Larsen Architects, has died at his home in Copenhagen. The 87-year-old architect is highly respected around the world by both industry peers and architecture lovers, many of whom have taken to social media site Twitter to pay their respects. A site has been set up by Henning Larsen Architects for condolences which can be accessed here.

A heartfelt statement on the Henning Larsen Architects website concludes: “Henning Larsen’s influence of architecture has been grand. He created a culture in the company that is driven by professional ambition and a desire to work with projects where architecture can make a difference. This is a heritage that we will carry with us.”

The 87-year-old architect founded his practice in 1959 and oversaw the creation of scores of significant structures around the world. These include the Royal Danish Opera in Copenhagen, The Danish Embassy in Riyadh, Malmo City Library, and Harpa Concert Hall in Reykjavik.

Widely known as a ‘master of light’, the Danish architect was not solely devoted to designing new structures but dedicated his time to the education of the next generation of architects. For many years Larsen taught at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts at the School of Architecture in Copenhagen and in 2001 he established the Henning Larsen Foundation to promote architecture in a wider sense.

Past recognition for Larsen’s work includes the 2012 Praemium Imperiale and the 2013 Europe Nostra Award from His Royal Highness the Prince Consort of Denmark. Henning Larsen Architects currently operates through five offices - Copenhagen, Oslo, Munich, Riyadh and Istanbul - with over 200 employees.
