SOM's record-breaking 90 degree twisted Cayan Tower completes in Dubai 

Dubai has welcomed another record-breaking tower this week as the Cayan Tower (formerly Infinity Tower) was inaugurated by its developer, Saudi Arabia-based Cayan Investment & Development. Cayan Tower is a 75-storey, 307m-high residential structure which is set apart by a 90 degree shift of its floorplates between the base and top, making it the tallest twisted tower in the world.

According to local publication Gulf News, future residents have already snapped up more than 80% of the 570 units on offer, 495 of which are 1-4 bedroom apartments. The reinforced concrete tower has a hexagonal floor plate set around a circular core and perforated screens to protect residents from the harsh Dubai sun. Architects behind the project, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) have incorporated a 90 degree twist into the tower to maximise viewing potential throughout the building.

SOM Design Director Ross Wimer explains: “The lower portion of the tower is oriented toward the exciting waterfront promenade of Dubai Marina, while the upper floors are rotated to face the Gulf.” SOM Consulting Partner George Efstathiou furthers: “Cayan Tower adds to SOM’s significant impact on Dubai’s 21st century skyline. Its elegance, technological innovation and sustainability are hallmarks of our storied 75 year history. It takes its place with our finest designs, including the nearby Rolex Tower and Burj Khalifa.”

To achieve this twirling shape, the corner and interior columns twist as they rise through the building and the perimeter columns have an identical shape and tilted relationship to the floor plate, simply shifted by just over a single degree from floor to floor. Straight vertical paths are achieved by confining MEP systems to the circular core or zones between the central circulation corridor and the residential units themselves.
