Corten steel boxes intersect gleaming white residence in a pine forest of Palma
GRAS Arquitectos has completed a major home extension to a private residence in Palma, Majorca. It was decided at an early stage that the new volumes were to contrast drastically with the existing building which is a classic white form with balconies and arching porches.
A series of Corten steel boxes have been slotted onto this volume, standing starkly against the gleaming white façade of the original form. Over time the shade of the Corten steel will change as the façade patinas although this process will take several years.
The architectural intervention by GRAS Arquitectos has created a new porch space as a bathroom volume projects over the garden, emphasising the exit to the outdoor space, a new bedroom and a games room, all through the integration of Corten steel boxes.
Far-reaching views across Palma Bay can be enjoyed from the games room and from atop the new pool, gym and spa volume which has an accessible green roof. This pool and spa are sunken into the sloping site and are therefore hidden from the front of the house but from behind, large windows open onto the garden, flooding the interior space with bright sunlight.
The sunlight reflects off the white marble within the interiors to further brighten the space. The concrete interior of the pool is covered with IPE wood on the floor and ceiling to add warmth and reference the pine forest within which the residence is located.
