Integrated sustainable elements designed to educate students on sustainable principles from young age in Kfar Saba, Israel

Designed by Knafo Klimor Architects, The Green School in Kfar Saba, Israel is a shining example of sustainable school design. The recently completed building not only educates first-sixth grade students on the basic curriculum but teaches them about the importance of green energy and a sustainable lifestyle.

Throughout their time at The Green School, children are introduced to global changes and encouraged to use the institution’s facilities out of school hours for gatherings and social activities.

The school was designed with a holistic approach, ensuring a minimal ecological footprint and enhanced efficiency in the use of land, water, energy and building materials, all of which are free of toxins. These construction materials were selected for their thermal, durable and recyclable qualities, keeping in line with The Green School’s ethos.

The main building centres on a sizeable courtyard with outdoor learning spaces, a green expanse and a playground. An agricultural field is located nearby and nature is brought into the main volume through these interactive spaces as well as green roofs and large windows which dominate the development.

A geothermal system has been integrated to meet a large proportion of the building’s energy consumption for heating and cooling, and rainwater and greywater harvesting is also in place throughout. Optimal thermal isolation has been achieved with double glazed windows characterised by thermal and acoustic elements. All of these factors have helped The Green School reach LEED Gold certification.
