Building award winner to create 'new face of Dubai'

A jury of recognised architects and business professionals from seven countries is to select the architect who will design the 'new face of Dubai'. The ThyssenKrupp Elevator Architecture Award for 2008 will be hosted by Dubai and the winner will subsequently contribute significantly to the landscape of the rapidly evolving city.

This year's awards are the eleventh held by ThyssenKrupp, one of the world's largest elevator companies, in collaboration with Dubai Munincipality and supported by the International Union of Architects. The awards aim to 'foster creative yet pragmatic new visions for developing a tall emblem structure' which will be built in Zaabeel Park (pictured).

Zabeel park is situated in Bur Dubai and occupies more than 47 hectares of land divided by major roads into 3 precincts, and connected by 2 pedestrian bridges. The green open areas cover about 26 hectares and the rest of the site is occupied by public recreational facilities. The Park also includes technology, sport, and entertainment centres.

This is the first time the awards have been held in the Middle East with all ten previous awards held in Europe."Dubai has one of the most impressive skylines in the world and is already an extraordinary destination for business, commerce and travel," said Javier del Pozo, CEO of ThyssenKrupp Elevator Southern Europe, Africa & Middle East, "We have decided to invite Dubai to play host to our international Achitecture Award competition, to promote new work."

The judges will be seeking state of the art unique designs that 'provide a return on investment to the public good' according to del Pozo. Green building will be a major focus as will a responsiveness to townscape and scenic aspects. The structure will be tall and functional but is not to contain commercial offices or residential premises according to the guidelines for entrants. Registration period will close on August 31 2008 and results will be announced May 2009. For full schedule and further details click HERE.
