OMA-designed Bryghusprojektet breaks ground on Copenhagen waterfront

OMA have begun construction on a new mixed-use scheme on Copenhagen waterfront entitled Bryghusprojektet. The volume will house the headquarters for the Danish Architecture Centre and create a missing link between the city centre, the waterfront and the culturally rich Slotsholmen district. The project is due to complete in early 2017.

Copenhagen waterfront is home to a plethora of historical and culturally important structures including the Christiansborg Palace, the Old Brewery, the Royal Library’s ‘Black Diamond’ and Copenhagen Opera House. OMA’s design pulls together cultural elements with public amenities such as a restaurant and café. Private residential units and office space will be supported by underground parking.

Ellen van Loon, Partner in Charge at OMA, details: “Instead of stacking a mixed-use program in a traditional way, we positioned the DAC in the centre of the volume, surrounded by and embedded within its objects of study: housing, offices and parking. The urban routes reach into the heart of the building and create a broad range of interactions between the different program parts and the urban environment.”

It was important for the architects that the building be not only a destination but a connector at the hinge of the waterfront and act as a welcoming entrance to the city. Renderings demonstrate that Bryghusprojektet will be located close to the recently completed Royal Theatre by Lundgaard og Tranberg Arkitekter A/S.

OMA are currently hiring for a Site Architect in Copenhagen via WAN Jobs. Click here to view the full job description.
