Architect's home in the Erba hills is a triumph of rural residential modernisation

A member of the architecture team whose pavilion concept for the Padiglione Italia Expo 2015 took 4th place last week has shared their divine private residence with WAN. Casa a Morchiuso is the home of Marco Castelletti of Marco Castelletti: Studio di Architettura.

The architect took an existing building dating back to the 1970s in the hills of Erba, Italy and began to transform its shell into a stunning new residence. Bringing the property up to date not only meant adding sustainable touches using modern technology but also to put a personal stamp on it.

Externally the team has removed the original pitched roof and, after inserting new perimeter walls, has created a flat replacement roof suitable for sunbathing and enjoying the picturesque surroundings. The roof is also now home to a series of photovoltaic panels for added sustainability.

In addition to the new roof system, Marco Castelletti: Studio di Architettura has created a double building envelope with a wooden grill which splays a repetitive pattern of shadow across the stark white façade within. This transitional space merges interior and exterior spaces and provides a number of porches and balconies.

Aside from the warm brown hues of the wood the residence is largely defined by white and black. The elements in contact with the outer perimeter are painted black while the walls of the recesses of the porches and balconies are painted white.

One of the darker areas is the water room which hosts a small Turkish bath. This can be accessed via the roof and is hidden at the centre of the house, naturally lit through a sliding glass system which reaches up to the flat roof.
