Quiet private residence at Mount Nebo, Queensland ventilated with sea breezes

This stunning home by Dion Seminara Architecture is located on a sprawling 52 acre site on Mt Nebo less than an hour from the heart of Brisbane in beautiful Queensland, Australia.

The block - which sits 500m above sea level - is home to a variety of native Australia flora and fauna, being home to koalas and wombats with platypus living nearby. The outside entertainment pavilion featuring its award winning swimming pool takes full advantage of this tranquil setting. It also houses a sauna, spa and bathroom that overlooks the relaxed garden complete with water features and stone monuments.

This 5-bedroom home is comprised of a number of private wings that are all interconnected via magnificent open-planning living areas. 4 of the bedrooms are found in one wing which also houses 2 bathrooms and a generously-sized office which can be accessed via a separate entrance.

The main bedroom is located on the first level which acts as a multi-purpose space. A parents' retreat is found here along with the marvellous private library. There is also a dressing room as well as a nursery.

The home is eco-friendly with natural lighting and ventilation a key to the overall design. The climate here is quite humid in the summer however the block is blessed with cool sea breezes and the design of the home takes full advantage of this. High ceilings assist in keeping the home cool whilst towering floor to ceiling windows serve the dual purpose of letting in lots of natural light whilst also taking full advantage of the wonderful scenery.

The large living areas which incorporate the lounge and dining areas are located on the northern side of the home. These areas are spacious and inviting and yet remain wonderfully connected allowing one to feel involved during times of entertainment.

This home also has an impressive home theatre that is far more practical than many other designs. Through the use of a retractable ceiling and walls the area can be used as a contained home cinema or, when not in use, it can open up to reveal a 2-level void that offers sensation views and excellent lighting. This area also contains an intimate fireplace for the occasional cold winter's evening.

The owner was keen that the design of the home should complement the environment that it was located in, but also cater for his love of Japanese architecture. Bringing the two things together was challenging for the architects but the results speak for themselves.
