Triplet of designs unveiled for Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art

Three designs for the Jan Shrem and Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art at the University of California in Davis have been revealed. The concepts are the final three in a design-build competition for a 1.6-acre site near the Robert and Margrit Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts and the public will be invited to express their views as to which concept should be realised before the final decision is made in mid-May.

The three design-build teams are: Kitchell, WORKac and Westlake Reed Leskosky; Oliver & Company, Henning Larsen Architects and Gould Evans; and Whiting-Turner, SO-IL and Bohlin Cywinski Jackson. Two of the architects involved - WORKac and SO-IL - are past winners of the Museum of Modern Art’s Young Architect Program and all have shown great skill in completing high quality cultural projects.

Chancellor Linda P. B. Katehi explained: “Our slate of architects reflects the founding philosophy of the UC Davis art department, built by untested individuals who rose to prominence with the work they made here. We are thrilled to name these three visionary teams who will honour our distinction as an international centre of innovation and propel us into the future.”

This sentiment was echoed by Dean of the Division of Humanities, Arts and Cultural Studies, Jessie Ann Owens, who stated: “These are innovators who are defining the discourse in architecture today. The competition and the museum embrace the spirit of experimentation that has been an enduring tradition at UC Davis.”

Once completed, the art museum will form a new centre for instruction at the University, promoting multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research and teaching. Art and Architecture will both be studied and endorsed at the building and it is imperative that the final design be a reflection of the experimental, transparent and open nature of the institution’s faculty.
