Winner for VELUX photography competition

This winter the UK has seen one of the wettest and coldest seasons for many years so it comes as no surprise that snow was a prominent feature in the winning submission to VELUX’s Lovers of Light photography competition. Fortunately contest winner Martin Dawe managed to capture a British winter scene in a positive light, with the extended fronds of a leaf-stripped tree outlined starkly against a pale morning sky.

Back in October 2012 daylight expert and roof window manufacturer VELUX challenged UK residents to enter a photography competition with images that creatively captured the important role that daylight plays in everyday life. The judging panel selected Martin Dawe from 9,000 applicants, with his image winning him a four night stay at the unique Treehotel in the Boreal Forest, Sweden, in the Arctic Circle.

Speaking on the selection, Charlotte Chapman, Marketing Manager at VELUX, said: “The judges have been astounded by the quality of the photographs submitted. It was very difficult for them to select just one shot, but Martin’s snowy January landscape represents an extraordinary depiction of natural daylight and stood out as the winner. The sharp image works both compositionally and creatively. It’s a very simple picture; it feels like something that hasn’t been seen before.”

Martin Dawe said: “My interest in photography only began at the beginning of this year, so it was a huge shock when I found out I won the Lovers of Light competition. The aspect of daylight, particularly at sunrise and sunset, is something from which I’ve drawn inspiration since I started taking photographs and one of the main reasons I entered Lovers of Light in the first place.

“This particular shot was inspired by my one of my favourite films, The Tree of Life. When I first saw the photo I really thought it captured the emotion and message of the film. It’s one of my favourite images, and the fact that such an expert panel of judges singled it out as the winner is very flattering. I’m so excited about the prize and can’t wait to visit the Arctic Circle.”
