Tower with one of the world's largest clock faces succumbs to flames in Grozny, Russia 


A 40-storey luxury hotel tower in Grozny, Russia was engulfed in flames on Wednesday evening after an apparent short circuit caused the entire building to catch alight. Local media reports that floors 2 to 40 were on fire however the blaze has now been extinguished and no-one has been injured.

Part of a complex of 7 tall towers in Grozny, the high-end hotel had recently been completed but Russian Deputy Emergency Situations Minister Aleksandr Chupriyan told Radio Free Library: “There is no automatic [fire-extinguishing system] installed inside that building yet; it is not completed.

“Besides, this new building does not yet have proper water supply. So, in accordance with the laws of physics, fire engines can only reach the 25th or 27th floor, at best, and the rest of the building remains uncovered.” Scores of people were safely evacuated from the ‘uninhabited’ building.

It is thought that the fire began on the 4th or 5th floor and spread rapidly due to the plastic trimmings on the building, engulfing the 13.6m-wide clock face at the top. The sixth largest clock face in the world, this 20.7 tonne clock was the crowning glory of the 5-star hotel.

The hotel is part of the Grozny-City complex which partly opened in 2011 with seven skyscrapers incorporating condominiums and hotel rooms. The towers range from 40 storeys to 18 storeys and are still under construction.
