Renzo Piano selects two shining stars for Visitors Center at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center in Athens

The Stavros Niarchos Foundation and world-renowned architect Renzo Piano today announced the winning design for the Visitors Center that will open this summer at the construction site of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC). The winning design was selected by Renzo Piano, architect of the SNFCC, from 10 finalists chosen in the National Architectural Students’ Competition. The competition, which was announced in January, was open to all architecture students currently studying at the undergraduate level in Greek architecture schools. In total, 93 designs were submitted.

The winning design was created by Agis-Panayotis Mourelatos and Spyridon Yotakis, architecture students at the School of Architecture, University of Patras and the School of Architecture-Engineering, National Technical University of Athens respectively. The winning team will receive a prize of €18,000.

Construction of the SNFCC Visitors Center is expected to begin immediately and will be open to visitors in July 2013. It will exist until the scheduled opening of the SNFCC in 2015 and will serve multiple functions: as a place for visitors to view the construction site and learn more about the SNFCC, as a location for public exhibits and other events relating to construction of the SNFCC, and as a setting for receptions and other gatherings related to the SNFCC.

In addition to the winner, Renzo Piano selected two other designs from the 10 finalists for special recognition. Second prize of €13,200 goes to Xeni Stoumpou, Valerian-Antonios Portokalis and Ioannis-Makarios Koufopoulos from the School of Architecture-Engineering, National Technical University of Athens. Third prize of €8,800 goes to Elias Economakis and Angelos Siampakoulis from the Department of Architecture, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

The following three teams received special mentions of €3,000 each:

- Konstantinos Tzioras, Alexios-Georgios Tsakalakis-Karkas, Vasilios Charitatos – School of Architecture,  University of Patras
-Anastasios Theodorakakis, Marios Papadakis, Constantinos Nikolakopoulos – School of Architecture, University of Patras
-Georgios Papamatheakis, Aliki Karanikola, Theodoros Koutros – School of Architecture-Engineering, National Technical University of Athens

The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center is the Stavros Niarchos Foundation’s largest individual gift, a €566,000,000 ($796,000,000) grant, as the Foundation is funding, in full, the Center’s construction and equipment. The SNFCC includes new state-of-the-art premises for the National Library of Greece and the Greek National Opera, as well as the Stavros Niarchos Park, which spans 42 acres. Upon its completion in 2015, the SNFCC will be donated to the Greek State, which will be exclusively responsible for its management and operation.
