gmp's National Convention and Exhibition Centre in Tianjin to sport filigree canopies
German practice von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) have presented their winning concept for the Tianjin Exhibition Centre which beat international competition entries from Fuksas, HHP and NBBJ/BIAD among others. The firm has completed a number of projects in Tianjin including the Grand Theatre which takes the inspiration for its shell-like form from its waterside location.
This latest project win is an expansive exhibition hall which will be constructed in two almost identical phases. Once complete, it will encompass 1.2 million sq m in total with 400,000 sq m of prime exhibition floor space sheltered under filigree fronds.
Destined to be one of the largest exhibition centres in China - and indeed the world - Tianjin Exhibition Centre will offer 32 exhibition halls connected by two thoroughfares and a central concourse with supporting hotels, offices, a congress centre, and administration facilities. Each of the display halls will have 12,500 sq m of floor space which can be used independently or in conjunction with a neighbouring hall.
Sheltering the pieces on display and visitors to the centre are a number of filigree canopies which offer shade from the sun and create a bold aesthetic for the development. These metallic sunshades extend into the centre’s external space to form sheltered spaces for informal discussion of the work displayed within.
