Amit Khanna Design Associates create an airy weekend house in Noida, India

The brief was for a client, also an architect, to create a weekend pavilion on a piece of land purchased primarily as an investment. The architects, Amit Khanna Design Associates (AKDA), were able to design freely as there were no particular design constraints in place aside from a tight budget.

This design project was undertaken by AKDA as a research project to introspect contemporary architectural design for a residence. Taking inspiration from the surrounding environment, the design was conceived around the particular local climate and the simplicity of materials and construction already present.

The design takes an innovative perspective on a modern spatial configuration for a home which is organised around 3 basic spaces. In addition there was a requirement for a large garden with a minimal amount of enclosed areas.

As the primary function would be as a weekend home, the architects decided that it was important that the main space served as the transition between the first two. The transition space was envisaged as a large, shaded extension of the living space that would make it eminently usable, when the weather was not too harsh.

A thin, linear block on the party wall was created which accommodates all of the enclosed spaces. A projecting slab on a series of thin, almost invisible, supporting columns defines the four living areas. The spaces are completely open; a roof with no walls, walls with no roof, a roof enclosed with glass.

These four spaces have been created so that they can be utilised in the vast range of Delhi's weather conditions. The flooring has been made out of Kota and the walls constructed out of brick. The 2 concrete slabs define the horizontals where the lower one acts as both the foundation and the floor of the room.
