Award-winning crematorium in Schiedam supported by musical performance space

A musical performance space and cultural venue that is also a crematorium has been awarded a renowned prize at the 60th annual Progressive Architecture Awards at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. Designed by Asymptote Architecture, the 1,977 sq m facility in Schiedam, Netherlands takes inspiration from the widely diverse religions practiced in the local community.

Noted as a ‘profound and beautiful project’ by Joan Soranno, juror for the Progressive Architecture Awards, the fluid white form draws from a plethora of traditional influences with a surprisingly muted result. The design seamlessly blends these references into a smooth white mass, creating a swathe of fluid material which ripples across the green site. Another juror, Reed Kroloff, agrees: “It is an elegant, reserved building that resolves the rectilinear and non-rectilinear geometries in a way that seems perfectly natural and without artifice.”

The interior of the building is softly lit by natural light which diffuses through a series of punctures in the roof arranged in a delicate pattern. This restrained lighting brings a sense of quiet to the interior volumes for an intimate and reflective series of spaces. The ceiling space is not only illuminated by the perforations but the external ripples of the roof are replicated within, adding an architectural element to the interior design.

The crematorium is supported by space for musical performances, art exhibitions, poetry readings and other cultural events, either allowing users of the crematorium to celebrate life through the arts or for others to use the space for stand-alone events. The complex is set in luscious grounds with verdant foliage and situated near elegant tree-lined canals.
