First commercial LEED Platinum building in Czech Republic completes in Prague

The third building in a new cluster by Richard Meier & Partners in Prague, Czech Republic has completed. City Green Court has been woven into the fabric of the Master Plan of Prague 4-Pankrac, a series of buildings designed by the New York-based architecture practice. The team worked in collaboration with Skanska Property Czech Republic on this project.

Slightly smaller in size than its neighbour City Tower, City Green Court has the honour of being the first office scheme in the Czech Republic to have received the LEED Platinum certification for its sustainable properties. To achieve this impressive certification, Richard Meier & Partners has encased the building in an efficient envelope, introduced natural ventilation into its soaring atrium and recycled materials across the build, amongst other elements.

As Richard Meier explains: “We have worked together with Skanska to make City Green Court a benchmark for green building design in the Czech Republic. The completed structure has a LEED Platinum rating, reflecting its strategies to conserve energy and to use environmentally friendly building materials. This assignment has been particularly challenging as it also meant addressing the historic beauty of Prague and at the same time creating a modern image of the City for its future.”

The external design of City Green Court speaks to other architectural elements in close proximity, not only the City Tower but older buildings in the wider neighbourhood. The basic design was influenced by Czech Cubism, its geometric volume subtly integrating sustainable elements such as vertical panels with fins, carefully angled to create comfortable working conditions for those within.

At the centre of the building is a large atrium lit by a substantial skylight which pours light down into the communal space and the office areas that branch off from it. A single height lobby welcomes users who enter through the formal covered gateway to the south, which leads on to the multi-storey atrium. The lower four floors are connected by a curling staircase which looks to reduce user dependency on vertical transportation systems. Green elements of these communal spaces include a single tree and green wall, while the penthouse level sports an extensive green roof.

Dukho Yeon, Design Partner-in-charge, comments: “The design solution for City Green Court sets new standards of quality of space and architecture for a typical speculative office building project. The materiality and form are controlled with considerable discipline and restraint pared down to the essential elements. It is an understated building with a huge presence, transforming dramatically depending on the views. We are extremely proud of our accomplishments with our Czech partners.”
