The 112,044m2 first phase of the new Singapore Management University by Edward Cullinan Architects, working with local practice KNTAA, will be officially opened on 20th January. The £90m campus will bring a new vibrancy right into the heart of Bras Basah, the colonial part of the city, with five buildings extending the existing urban pattern to integrate into and engage with the surrounding community. Won in international competition in 2000, Juror and distinguished Japanese architect Fumihiko Maki wrote 'The winning entry answers the difficult urban questions quite brilliantly...' The attached image shows a typical elevation of a faculty building with projecting lecture rooms, looking from Bras Basah Road, through retained rain-trees, towards the park.
