Buro II & ArchI+I project to provide social housing and office space in Belgium

Belgian architects Buro II & ArchI+I have completed a project which features a new office and social housing for people in the city of Kortrijk, Belgium. The design comprises new office space for the social housing company, Goedkope Woning, together with six rented homes and a house in the centre of the city. As part of the scheme, a 5-storey building which is over 100 years old has combined with a new 4-storey structure, covering a total area of 1370 sq m.

Speaking about the project, the architects said: “The seven new homes have given 20 residents excellent and comfortable living spaces in the heart of the city. The employees of Goedkope Woning now have an inspiring and pleasant working environment, in which they can receive tenants in an exemplary manner.”

The scheme is a mixture of renovation and new builds, as the former outbuildings were demolished due to their dilapidated state, whilst inside the office, the old furniture has been replaced with spacious tables with individual worktop lighting and interior courtyards have also been added.

For the interior space, the original windows were renovated and the stone floor in the hall restored, together with the ceilings and fireplaces being given a new lease of life. Other design elements include the decision to use all the supporting services of the office as an ‘acoustic buffer’ between the office and the visitors area, an area which includes the kitchen, storeroom, toilets and photocopying corner as well as information counters.

The social housing apartments are mostly shared out on the top floors of the old building with the first and second floor containing two-bedroom flats and a one-bedroom flat located in the attic. As well as this, three new apartments were built on the adjacent furniture store, situated three floors above the office, together with the addition of a 3-bedroom house located next to the office garden.
