Elkus Manfredi releases details of Sowwah Central, destined to open in spring 2017

A new mixed-use development which will create Abu Dhabi’s first super-regional urban shopping centre has been announced. Designed by Boston-based firm Elkus Manfredi and developed by Gulf Related, Sowwah Central will cover an area of 214,000 sq m and features a shopping centre together with a luxury hotel and residential towers on Al Maryah Island, Abu Dhabi.

Projected to open in the spring of 2017, the mixed-use development will link up with The Galleria at Sowwah Square, a luxury shopping and dining development spanning 51,000 sq m. When combined, the two developments will house more than 500 retail, leisure, dining and entertainment options.

Kenneth A. Himmel, Co-Managing Partner of Gulf Related and President and CEO of Related Urban said: “Our vision for Sowwah Central was born out of the tremendous response by the luxury retail community to the unique offering at The Galleria. Sowwah Central will create a new paradigm in Abu Dhabi through the creation of the region’s premier one-stop destination for retail, leisure and dining.”

With an estimated development cost of €201m (US$272m), the Sowwah Central project will feature a world class collection of stores, a state-of-the-art cinema complex, various entertainment options for young people and a luxury health club. As well as this, dining options will be included in the scheme with over 80 sites, including al fresco cafés, bistros and fine dining restaurants together with panoramic, open air rooftop food hall.

Open spaces have also been incorporated into the design meaning that key events can be held in landscaped areas surrounding the centre. Sowwah Central will also house two 37,000 sq m towers; one with a 5-star hotel and serviced apartments and the other with luxury residences.

The scheme represents an ongoing move to develop Al Maryah Island (formerly Sowwah Island) being named as Abu Dhabi’s new Central Business District (CBD). Already home to offices of global companies such as Deloitte, JP Morgan, GE and Gulf Capital and located between Abu Dhabi’s existing downtown and newly-constructed residential districts, the Sowwah Central project is an important part of the urban development plan of the island.
