Mixed-use complex in Moscow inspired by rich creative history of Kuntsevo
Kuntsevo is a thriving area of Moscow which has historically been a haven for creative types, including realist painter Vasily Perov and novelist and playwright Ivan Turgenev. This hum of creative energy was the starting point for a new mixed-use project in the district by the US-based Jerde Partnership.
Due to open in spring 2014, Kuntsevo Plaza is an amalgamation of public spaces and private residences, stitched together with fluid street connections. Once complete the scheme will occupy an entire city block with a series of geometric buildings animated with bright colour schemes - said to be inspired by the Russian avant-garde art movement - and digital screens.
David Rogers FAIA, Jerde Design Director, details: “We designed Kuntsevo Plaza with the intention of bringing a renewed energy to Moscow - a city already rich in culture and history - and a goal to breathe new life into it. There hasn’t been a development of this scale, program mix, or contemporary design style before in Russia.”
The complex will have a retail, entertainment and cultural core, with two high-rise residential apartment blocks topped with green terraces, and a Class-A office building. A network of passages runs through the block-wide development like a river delta before connecting again at the main road. Connections to a transit line can be found in the grand exterior plaza, affording easy access for both local residents and tourists.
