Office of Architecture and Design shares competition design for Interfaith Chapel 


Office of Architecture and Design has shared its competition entry for the University of North Florida Interfaith Chapel in WAN, situated on the outer Jacksonville campus. The project, which occupies an area of 604 sq m and is situated on an elevated peninsula on a small lake, is expected to achieve LEED silver.

The facility proposed is non-denominational and will host meetings, meditations, weddings as well as other events. Situated on a secluded, leafy spot within the Florida campus, the only visible marker of the building will be the chapel spire, which will just be seen above the dense ring of trees on the site.

Removal of the foliage in the surrounding forest has been kept to a minimum, only being taken away so that visitors can enjoy views of the water and to provide a backdrop to weddings and gatherings. The project will make the most of the outdoor space with outdoor pavilions, lookouts, platforms, sculptures and a central lawn for functions. Members of the public will also be able to enjoy the forest and lake views by using the proposed non-linear network of paths that will be created.

The design of the chapel reveals the use of steel buttresses which will go through a central glass skylight, together with outdoor spaces either side of the chapel for visitors to congregate after services and a veranda to enjoy the lagoon. A cluster of buildings adjacent to the chapel will also be built, providing essential space for dressing areas, restrooms and service functions.

In keeping with the environmental credentials of the project, recycled content and locally harvested Southern Pine will be used in the construction of the facility and the use of geothermal heating and cooling for the buildings has been proposed. Rooftop photovoltaic panels will help to supplement the facility’s power demands and passive strategies for seasonal shade and cross-ventilation will be employed.
