Construction of Iceberg scheme nears end

The end is on the horizon for Iceberg, a jagged residential community in Aarhus by an impressive collaborative including CEBRA, JDS/Julien De Smedt Architects, SeARCH, Louis Paillard. The team have been working together on the 800,000 sq m development since 2008 and construction is now in its final stages, with the inauguration scheduled for May.

Once completed the Iceberg - or Isbjerget in Danish - will be one of the first realised buildings in a new harbourfront port in Aarhus: De Bynære Havnearealer. In total this widespread redevelopment scheme includes 12 separate projects and the first residents officially moved in last year.

By the summer of 2013 it is hoped that Iceberg will be buzzing too as the 7,000 inhabitants make themselves at home. There is also scope for 12,000 jobs throughout the complex, some of which may be taken by those who live elsewhere in the new community hub.

A statement about the design of Iceberg released by CEBRA reads: “The inspiration for Isbjerget originated primarily from the site’s extraordinary location. Isbjerget is laid out as four L-shaped wings, where the street spaces in between open towards the water. In order to obtain optimal daylight conditions and views over the bay, the building volumes are cut up by jagged lines.

“The roofs rise and fall into peaks and valleys, which create visual passages that cross the individual volumes - like floating icebergs that constantly refract one’s gaze. Thus, even the back wing’s residents can enjoy the view.”

To ensure a varied population in Iceberg, the collaborative team have blended a series of housing options, with 2-storey townhouses and modest affordable units topped with glorious penthouses with far-reaching views. Dynamic open spaces bring residents together at the base of the housing volumes with the hope of establishing a local neighbourhood vibe.
