KEO International Consultants' Kuwait Maastricht Business School begins onsite

The 15,000 sq m site for the project is adjacent to a major highway south of Kuwait City and will accommodate 600 students seeking a professional MBA degree. Led by KEO’s Design Director Raj Patel, the design solution juxtaposes two L-shape buildings: one contains student areas including instructional spaces, lounges, student activity, community space, and auditorium; the other houses the administrative and faculty program.

Connecting the two L-shape buildings is the Academic Support Space comprising of a Library, Study Spaces, Academic Advising, and Resource Collection. This program represents the shared spaces between the students and faculty and emerges as an uplifting shape set in the center of the courtyard facing the main entrance to the complex. Program components are distinct responding to scheduled times of operation, yet still maintain a unified image.

Two large portals are created as the ends of the admin/faculty wing touches the academic student wing- one creating pedestrian access to the courtyard from the main drop off while the other provides pedestrian access from the parking on the eastern portion of the site. A limited material palette of stone, metal panels and glass is used to treat the facades of each of the three building components differently.

The admin/faculty building is a solid form with punched windows responding to individual offices and spaces within. The academic student wing is mostly clad in glass to allow for natural light during the day while revealing the busy activity of classrooms at night. Finally, the shared facility building in the centre of the courtyard is almost entirely clad in glass to become a glowing jewel at night and creating a unique icon for the school.
