Young Slovak studio wins development of former open air amphitheatre in Bratislava

Nice architects has taken first place in open urban-architectural competition for area of former open air amphitheatre in Bratislava, Slovakia. The 52,000 sq m site is re-imagined to contain 350 apartments and also administration spaces, hotel and other public facilities in a high-density community. One of the key requirements was to preserve the V-shaped Chestnut garden within the future development.

The site is located just across the road from the city's urban forest close to city centre. It is a unique plot with great views of the whole town; the terrain is too steep for comfortable traffic, sloping northward and in the southern part a small park is situated which is to remain as a park.

The most crucial question for Nice Architects was how to meet the required high floor demand at the same time as offering high quality public spaces in such a high density space. As a result the team distributed the proposed volume along the edges of the site. It gave the opportunity to place underground garages along the edge of the site leaving the heart of the zone for grandiose and green public space connected with the adjacent park.

The Parkhill houses were designed essentially as a row of houses with flexible floor plans and a set of various facades. Final composition of the buildings is also serving as small reminiscence of the former amphitheatre.
