Water used throughout to unify inside and outside spaces
Khan Residence Dubai derives a sense of place by exploring the traditional Gulf Arabic courtyard house typology. The style of the building is distinctly modern exploring the relationship between indoor and outdoor space while respecting the thresholds of privacy, structural sequence of spaces and cultural sensitivities. The entrance is a tightly controlled double height space entered via a 4 metre high pivot door that leads from the street to a tranquil space that creates an internal water feature. A feature staircase leads to the family area above and a bridge transects the full height spaces bathed by a skylight. This area leads to formal areas and guest accommodation in one direction and discrete family areas in the other.
Water is used as a unifying feature throughout the house with the entrance rising from the sheet above a water feature, extending the entrance hallway to the linear lap pool and forming the focus of the courtyard garden. A roof terrace benefits from panoramic views across the plot towards the Dubai Skyline.
Internal finishes are cool and neutral with neutral limestone and blue-ridge maple flooring, complementary sandstone and teak decks externally leaving a lasting impression of calmness and tranquillity. White planar surfaces are articulated with tactile hardwood timber shutters and aluminium framed glazed fenestration.
