Bjarke Ingels Group's West 57 scheme in New York receives planning permission

Plans for an unusual residential block at 57th Street and the Hudson River in New York have been given planning approval. Designed by Danish architecture firm Bjarke Ingels Group - which also has offices in New York - for developers The Durst Organisation, the West 57 scheme stretches for almost an entire block on a very challenging site.

Former plans for the site included an educational facility, a hotel and a data centre but all three had fallen through, with City Planning Commissioner Amanda Burden requesting something ‘iconic’. The Durst Organisation responded with an ambitious design by Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) which sees a twisted residential form rise from three to thirty-eight stories, offering 753 apartments, 20% of which will be classed as ‘affordable’.

Founder of BIG, Bjarke Ingels explains: “The building is conceived as a cross breed between the Copenhagen courtyard and the New York skyscraper. The communal intimacy of the central urban oasis meets the efficiency, density and panoramic views of the tall tower in the new hybrid typology. The courtyard is to architecture what Central Park is to urbanism: a giant green garden surrounded by a dense wall of space for living.”

Burden has backed the design, seeing the project though planning approval in December: “Our approval will facilitate development of a significant new building with a distinctive pyramid-like shaped design and thoughtful site plan that integrates the full block site into the evolving residential, institutional, and commercial neighbourhood surrounding it.”

The residential apartments will each include external space with a central courtyard creating an open void through the volume approximately the same size as an American football field. Projecting into this space will be the outdoor terraces for each residential unit. More details of the design can be found here.
