Brilliant, excellent use of the site and blends so well into the landscape!

Award Entry

A contemporary home designed to blend into the landscape of Kodaikanal

House in the Hills sits on a slope in Kodaikanal, southern India with a view of the surrounding forests allowing plenty of sunlight and warmth throughout the house. The architects were asked to build the house with mobility in mind for their client's needs, despite the challenging topography, particularly in the entry and principal areas of the house. These areas are all on the upper level of the building with an immediate connection to the rear landscape. The guest bedrooms and lounge areas are easily accessible for maintenance from the lower level.

There are two wings connected by a vestibule; the primary winG is a transparent box, with the core floating within it, the master suite is reflected in volume as a solid rectangular box one end facing the south and containing the sleeping area. The other is a lounge seemingly floating over the lower part of the hill.

A timber screen provides privacy and a partial view of the hill and the building materials are left in their natural state to blend in with the landscape like local stone, such as exposed concrete and timber. The majority of the furniture was designed by a local carpenter and hand crafted for the house in keeping with the respect for the site's surroundings.
