'Monolithic volume' of house blends into suburban surroundings

The house is located in Gerakas, a suburb of Athens with strong characteristics of the suburban environment. The area is dominated by private residences with small gardens and lots of public green spaces. The shape of the plot (narrow face - big depth) and the view towards the park lead the architects to design a building attached to the two adjacent plots.

On the ground floor is the living area, the kitchen and the dining room. The living room was placed in the front part of the ground floor, in order to have a view of the park. The kitchen, at the back of the house, has direct access to the private back garden a place for the whole family to use especially during the summer months.

The entrance door is reached through an open corridor. A curved wall panel with wooden louvres is set to the left. The sheltered walkway, leads to the entrance of the house. The upper floor is a monolithic volume, touching the side edges of the plot and at the same time sheltering the house entrance on the ground floor. This floor contains two bedrooms, a sitting room and private bathrooms. In the basement the client wanted two parking spaces, a cellar for their wines and lots of storage room and space for mechanical installations.

The white colour of the house was combined with cedar wood and glass surfaces of fencing at the boundaries of the plot, along with simple volumes in order to produce a minimal, almost Doric architecture. The house was designed to blend with the particular suburban environment in terms of size, height and form.
