Iredale Pedersen Hook designs housing for indigenous communities
The East Kimberley transitional housing forms part of a national pilot project to help transition indigenous families into home ownership. The occupants were unknown at the time of designing. Iredale Pedersen Hook responded to this with a variety of housing types embedded with flexibility to personalise and inhabit the spaces.
Post-occupancy evaluations on previous housing revealed a desire to inhabit outdoor spaces with flexibility for privacy and acoustic separation. Each house design includes numerous outdoor spaces allowing occupants to engage with the street and community, or retreat to private courtyards.
Carports are oversized and designed with outdoor fans and power acting as flexible spaces capable of accommodating multiple uses. The architects responded to the extreme climate of Kununurra by increasing the possibility for natural ventilation, shading walls and outdoor spaces with parasol walls, and insulating outdoor roof spaces. Recent post occupancy evaluations reveal a rich, diverse and at times inventive use of space, validating the design decisions and outcomes.
