In a country where aestheticism dominates in the architectural award stakes, it's encouraging to know that the Ingehoven/Architectus' 1 Bligh office building in Sydney is recognised for its ecologically sound qualities by WAN.
Congratulations. May the ecological force be with you.

Office tower from ingenhoven architects & architectus raises the bar for sustainable buildings in Australia

The 139-metre tall 1 Bligh office building in Sydney, Australia, was inaugurated in autumn 2011. Due to its compact geometry and a slight rotation of the building in relation to its site, all offices enjoy unobstructed views of the city's beautiful harbour.

All the typical functions of the ground floor have been raised to allow a public plaza at street level. The high-rise building is a new highlight in Sydney´s skyline. In addition to its spatial efficiency the building boasts an ecological concept that is not only unique for Sydney but also for the entire Australian continent.

1 Bligh is the first high-rise office tower in the southern hemisphere to feature a double-skin glass facade. An outer glass skin protects computer-controlled sun shades, shielding the double-glazed curtain wall from the sun, whilst reflecting natural light into the building. 1 Bligh incorporates an innovative tri-generation system that uses gas and solar energy to generate cooling, heating and electricity on site.

Waste water from the building and Sydney Water sewer is treated on site for toilet flushing and make up water to the cooling towers. A rainwater tank recycles rainwater for irrigation. As a result of these systems sewage emissions have been reduced by 90%. The building is the first high-rise tower to receive the highest six star certificate of the Australian Green Star environmental rating system.
