echnologically advanced, energy efficient oasis of green space within a high density urban precinct
Multi award winning Platinum Sentral, designed by Cox Architecture in collaboration with Perunding Alam Bina and Kumpulan Senireka and completed in August 2012, is the first commercial development in Malaysia to be awarded a Platinum rating under Singapore’s Green Mark rating scheme and is Malaysian Green Building Index Certified. Platinum Sentral, developed by MRCB, is an active new 94,000-sq-m GFA retail and commercial development at the heart of KL Sentral.
The development, built upon an existing desolate concrete deck over Kuala Lumpur’s busiest railway interchange has created a green oasis of pocket parks, roof gardens, green walls and water features in an otherwise extremely dense urban precinct dominated by vehicular traffic. The composition of buildings constrained in height and location by the existing structure was designed to weave a landscape of verdant gardens activated by food and beverage outlets around an internal retail atrium whilst providing a campus of individual office buildings above.
The atrium is entirely naturally ventilated, a first for Malaysia, bringing office workers and public together in comfort and with a sense of containment and discovery. Energy savings features include; optimal building envelope configuration to ensure good daylight penetration, solar shading and high performance low-e double glazed units to minimise heat load, sensor controlled high efficiency light fittings, solar energy generation, waste heat energy recovery, an automated waste collection system, energy regenerative lifts, sensor activated escalators and public space cooled by natural ventilation rather than AC.
Water efficiency was achieved by use of high efficiency fittings, leak detection metering and through rainwater and condensate harvesting for irrigation of gardens. Sustainable products certified under the Singapore Green Labelling Scheme were selected and local products and manufacturers were used. Green walls and extensive open space with shade trees, grass and water features provide amenity as well as microclimate cooling.
