Inspiration taken from Japanese style houses and traditional colonial Australian houses
Edward Street house was designed for an artist, his musician wife and their three young children. The site is in inner suburban Melbourne approximately 4 km from the central business district. There is an existing bluestone duplex at the front of the site that is heritage listed.
This was a refreshing and unusual challenge for Sean Godsell architects as they had no recent suburban houses on their recent projects. The majority of the houses the architects produced in the past were free-standing in country of coastal regions, so the Edward Street house presented new problems to be solved in its design and build.
Public and private realms are defined via these investigations rather than consciously considered. The architects said, “cultural overlaps between the traditional Japanese house and the traditional colonial house in the Australian context are a constant source of inspiration”.
