JDS wins project in Lille and gets shortlisted for Masterplan in Lexington, Kentucky through WAN Business Information Service

Youth Centre, Lille, France

Two years ago, JDS won an invited competition for a youth centre in Lille, which has recently acquired the building permit so work can start in 2013. Over the past twenty years Lille has become a European hub; a destination for business and congress, a great place to study and live and also a tourist destination. It is a city with a turbulent history of conquest and reconquest, a heritage as an important medieval city and later on enjoyed and sometimes suffered the title of Northern France industrial capital.

JDS's project emerges from the idea of creating an urban catalyst, accommodating three distinct programmes on a triangular site. By placing a program in each point of the triangle the building offers maximum privacy while allowing a closeness and continuity of space, organised around a garden, like a cloister of calm in the centre of the city. The lifting of the mass of the programme at the corners illuminates and activates the adjacent public spaces and creates a continuity from outside to inside of the building.

Towns Branch Commons Master Plan, Kentucky, US

The JDS team has been selected as 1 of 5 teams to compete for the ambitious Town Branch Commons in Lexington, bringing Town Branch Creek to the surface for the first time in more than 100 years. The JDS core team is composed of Balmori (NYC) for landscape, Nitsch Engineering (Boston), Atelier Ten (NYC) for sustainable development and JDS as lead.

Julien De Smedt adds: "We're absolutely thrilled to announce (with the help of WAN Business Information Service) our shortlisting for the exciting masterplan of Town Branch, Lexington. Our team joins local and international knowledge to face the challenges of this exceptional project in downtown Lexington. We're delighted to share our news with WAN's readers and wish WAN to continuously expand so our community grows closer and more united."

Ultimately, the Town Branch Commons Master Plan will include:

• A summary of the issues and challenges affecting the area, particularly recommendations on benefits and challenges of day lighting Town Branch Creek.
• A summary of the urban design framework and connections that will support additional development along the Town Branch Commons.
• Dynamic public workshops that inspire and challenge community stakeholders to be bold and creative regarding the future of the public space network,
• Illustration and prioritization of short-term and long-term design concepts, improvement strategies, identification of 'catalytic projects' along the corridor and
• A multi-media marketing piece summarising the plan and its components.
