London based Studio Bednarski working with Flint & Neill Partnership have won a limited competition organised by the Welsh Development Agency to which four design teams were invited. The shortlist included also Grimshaw, Yee Associates and Murray Dunlop Architects. The 37-acre area, known as Roath Basin South, is located southeast of Cardiff Bay. This yet to be reclaimed land is accessible only through a single lift bridge. Infrastructure works necessary to support development of this area include the provision of a new fixed link crossing over the Outer Lock. The lock, 24 meters wide, is a listed structure and this was the critical factor that influenced the form of the winning bridge design. Structural supports to the bridge deck have been moved away from the dock walls resulting in a 41m structural span.
