New library an important step in fulfilling university master plan, also conceived by John Portman & Associates

The new Brooks Library at Norfolk State University is conceived as a student-focused facility that will become the new heart of the campus. The building is positioned to create two new quadrangles to the East and West. A new clock tower will serve as the campus focal point.

The 132,000 sq ft (12,263 sq m) building includes a 3-storey round rotunda lobby, the circulation desk, 24/7 Internet cafe, staff offices, as well as other functional spaces. The library's interior is designed as a lively, activated and inviting space that will accommodate the University's growing population.

The building design team is pursuing Silver LEED certification, as sustainability practices have been of utmost importance throughout the design process.
