Lift manufacturer awarded 2012 WAN Product of the Year Award by esteemed jury

Following a highly entertaining jury session in London in October, we can now reveal that the winner of the 2012 WAN Product of the Year Award sponsored by BAU is KONE’s MonoSpace. Selected as ‘the most energy-saving product’ on our shortlist by ALL Design’s Scott Lawrie, the new lift system is 35% more energy efficient than KONE’s current market-leading model and meets the VDI A Rating for energy consumption.

For Brendon Moss of Land Securities, it was KONE’s position in the manufacturing industry that was key: “It makes an awful lot of sense for hotel and residential schemes, and I think all the items they listed in their submission point towards great innovation in the lift industry.”

KONE has grown from strength to strength in the lift market, after launching the world’s first machine room less elevator back in 1996. The two main sectors targeted by KONE are residential and commercial, with space optimisation meaning that even projects with a modest footprint can still benefit from quality design through KONE Monospace.

Moss continued: “I think the lift is a clear leader in terms of innovation and eco-credentials as it will have the biggest impact worldwide”, solidifying KONE’s position as the leader in this coveted award category.

Also singled out by our jurors was LTI’s Innova Bee Recuperatore, a shower drainage system that recovers waste and heat to convert it into useable energy. For Buro Happold’s Andrew Best, this was one of those projects that you can’t believe didn’t exist before, as he explained: “Once you see it, it makes you think ‘Of course! If you can extract heat energy from the waste, then that has to be a good thing!’”

Whilst all of our judges were impressed by LTI’s sustainable system, it was decided that more product development was needed, Best concluding: “It’s a really great idea; we don’t think it’s fully resolved, but definitely a step in the right direction. It’s definitely worthy of encouragement and reward - a really interesting idea that would bare further exploration.” The entry was thus awarded a commendation.

This year’s jury panel was made up of experts Scott Lawrie from ALL Design, Tim Morgan from Pilkington, Brendon Moss of Land Securities, Zoe Laughlin from the Institute of Making and Buro Happold’s Andrew Best. This year, the WAN Product of the Year Award was sponsored by leading trade fair BAU, and KONE will be presented with their award at BAU’s next event in Munich this coming January.
