HOK completes landmark for Azerbaijan's capital city

The client’s ambition was to create an iconic building representing Azerbaijan’s emergence onto the global stage. Set on a prominent location adjacent to the country’s Parliament, overlooking the centre of the capital city Baku, the evocative form of Baku Flame Towers is a direct response to the brief.

The development centres on three towers, each sweeping dramatically upwards to form a striking silhouette on the city’s skyline. Known as the 'The Land of the Fire', Azerbaijan’s ancient history of fire worship, combined with the natural gas production which drives the country today, provided the inspiration for HOK’s iconic design. From the dramatic flick of their peak, the towers flow gracefully down into a composition of metallic pavilions which continue the tower’s language of swooning curves and graceful angles.

Glass gaskets form a fluid boundary between the towers, pavilions, and the surrounding context. Intended to evoke the variegated scale of historic Baku, the pavilions house retail and leisure spaces which serve as a natural connection between disparate uses of the towers. The tallest of the three towers contains 130 luxury residential units over 39 floors.

The hotel tower defines the northern corner of the site and consists of 250 rooms and 61 serviced apartments over 33 floors. The third corner of the triangular site is marked by the office tower, representing approximately 33,000 square metres of commercial office space on 32 levels.

In overcoming the challenges of constructing such an ambitious structure in a seismic region, the design team utilised cutting edge technologies to create the dense and geometrically complex form of the complex. The resulting structure is a beacon of modernity and a fitting icon for the global city that is Baku.
