Long Night of Architecture planned this January as Munich welcomes BAU 2013

This coming January will see the second edition of BAU’s Long Night of Architecture, opening the otherwise-private architectural gems of Munich to the public with guided tours and lectures on the buildings’ architectural qualities.

During BAU 2011, a number of buildings across the city were opened to attendees of the conference as well as the general public with an astonishing level of interest. Attended by 14,000 people, the Long Night of Architecture was a roaring success and BAU has planned an even more comprehensive event this coming January with 40 buildings signed up to take part.

This year, the team at BAU will be providing free transportation between the buildings with shuttle buses running every 15 minutes along 11 different routes. Knowledgeable architecture students will be giving talks on the buses and lectures or guided tours will be available at most locations en-route.

Outstanding buildings such as the Coop-Himmelb(l)au-designed BMW Welt and the Allianz Arena, both of them stations on the route in 2011, will again feature on the programme for 2013. Among the new buildings that were recently opened and therefore new to the LNDA list, are the ADAC headquarters in Hansastrasse and the FOAG building in Messestadt West, plus also the bulthaup building on Prinzregentenplatz.

Aside from the open tours there will be a number of fixed tours specifically for BAU attendees in a variety of foreign languages however booking is essential as these tours are filling up fast!

Also worth bearing in mind if you are attending the BAU Conference in Munich this January is the Future of Building Forum C2 which BAU 2013 is realising in cooperation with Bauwelt and DBZ Deutsche Bauzeitschrift. This focused seminar will examine the future of the design profession through a number of case studies to decipher the possible directions the industry may take.

Each day this forum will look at different themes that will be having a significant impact on the future of building. Infrastructure and the urban environment: Mobility, climate change and dwindling energy reserves - all these are prompting the search for new solutions for our urban areas. What does the city of the future look like? And what differences will there be around the globe?
