HASSELL completes new office building for 4 government departments in Melbourne

The Government Services Office is a new landmark located at the intersection of old and new Dandenong. The project, developed and built by Grocon, is one of the first major built projects of the Revitalising Central Dandenong initiative. The HASSELL team delivered the architecture, integrated fitout, landscape architecture and statutory planning services.

The brief was to create a high standard of urban design and quality workplace in this outer-suburban region, and to assist in the rebirth of the precinct as a major mixed-use activity centre.

The building, completed in 2011 and fully occupied by four government departments, has more than 14,400 sq m of highly efficient office space over eight levels, an underground car park and staff bicycle facilities. Corner pocket atria connect various departments vertically, enlivened by greenery and visible from the surrounding streetscape. Cantilevered upper levels provide solar shading to northern and eastern facades, while the building's southern edges step back to allow sunlight penetration. A landscaped roof terrace provides a series of outdoor rooms clad in intriguing timber battens that filter sunlight onto the street below.

A high degree of public engagement is achieved through large communal spaces which have a strong relationship with the surrounding urban fabric. The public foyers are activated by traditional retail, food / beverage and community incubator spaces.

The project achieved a 6 Star Green Star design rating through good design practices and introducing initiatives such as timber salvaged from trees destroyed in the 2009 Victorian bushfires. Other sustainability features include an underfloor air distribution system, rainwater and grey water retention and re-use and solar hot water.
