Japan’s new National Stadium is one step closer to finding a designer. Eleven practices, including Olympic stadium designers Zaha Hadid Architects and Populous, have been shortlisted for the competition to design the new stadium. The brief called for an 80,000-seat stadium that must be completed in time to host the 2019 Rugby World Cup.

The competition, which received a total of 46 applicants, restricted entry to practices that had been recipients of the Pritzker Prize, an AIA gold medal, UIA gold medal, Praemium Imperiale or RIBA gold medal. Firms were also required to have experience of designing a stadium with a capacity of 15,000 or more.

The full list of entries selected to proceed to the second round:

• Cox Architecture pty Ltd – Alastair Ray Richardson (Australia)

• POPULOUS – Rod Sheard (Great Britain)

• UNStudio/Yamashita Sekkei Inc. – UNStudio VAN BERKEL EN BOS U.N. STUDIO B.V (The Netherlands)
