MQA create landmark structure for Chennai
This project is a design for a regional office building for Food Corporation of India. Being a government building, it demanded the creation of a landmark structure truly inspirational to people for years to come.
The site is adjoined to Egmore railway station, in a predominately residential area. It is a 40,000 sq ft parcel cut out of 28 acres of food grain storage plot, accessed via a peaceful 9-metre-wide road.
The requirement was to have 4 large floor plates for office use. The architects created free flowing floor plates, all four different, stacking them one above the other. The union of all different floor plate made a unique composition and an iconic structure. Different shapes of floor plate created a terrace garden and outdoor space for each office. It also created a huge canopy at the top-most level which brings an unusual excitement while approaching the building.
Simple façade detail is taken to keep the fascination of free flowing shape untouched. Building functionality was achieved through a couple of cores to bring in separate distinctiveness to various functions. Interior spaces are well planned and placed such a way that creates the right balance between shape and function with required connectivity.
Being a commercial building, energy optimisation was crucial. The design evolved to include a façade with minimum opening towards solar sensitive orientation. Projected surfaces create shadows for lower floor thus reducing direct sun light. And further in some locations double glazed low emission glass was proposed
