A green working space concept for Ottawa’s largest new office development in the last 25 years
Located at the corner of Slater and O’Connor Streets, 150 Slater is a Class-A Office Building that was designed to respond to the needs of Export Development Canada (EDC). The 18-storey building has a total above-ground area measuring approximately 49,980 sq m, making it the largest new office development project in downtown Ottawa in the last 25 years.
Although the building occupies the majority of the site, three large outdoor terraces were integrated into the design to give users a direct interaction with their exterior environment. Distinct from other buildings by its airiness, 150 Slater establishes a desirable environment for pedestrians by encompassing a human scale and developing a reciprocal relationship with the street. The defined lower podium blends with the streetscape through a playful combination of transparent and opaque materials. Solid volumes protrude from the glazed façade and a void at the corner accentuated by a majestic awning marks the entrance.
From within the building, the transparency permits a constant interaction with the street and reinforces sense of security for workers, visitors, and passers-by alike. 150 Slater adopts an open-air concept for the office spaces. Innovative design maximises functional space with an environment that promotes collaboration and provides a visual connection between the interior and exterior. The 4.5-metre cantilever at the perimeter of all floors gives a great flexibility for workspace layout and provides a column-free exterior envelope that maximises natural light penetration.
The main design goal was to provide a quality indoor environment while saving energy and water. 150 Slater aims to achieve CaGBC LEED-Gold certification through different strategies such as heat recovery, efficient building envelope, use of recycled materials, low consumption sanitary appliances and green roofs to mitigate the Urban Heat Island Effect.
