Funding mounts for Academy Museum of Motion Pictures as new images released

A fresh round of images has been released of Renzo Piano and Zoltan Pali’s designs for the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. The sketches outline the planned renovation works to the 1938 Streamline Moderne Building in Los Angeles which will become the home of the museum run by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Plans from the design duo suggest restoring the Wilshire and Fairfax street-front facades and inserting a spherical glass structure at the back of the building. The Streamline Moderne building has lain empty or underutilised for many years and it is the hope of the Academy to bring it back to life in a $250m overhaul.

Earlier this year, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences began a campaign to raise money for the project, already amassing over $100m through private donations which is has referred to as ‘encouraging’. The scheme will blend together elements of art and technology, regaling visitors with a history of the film industry.

Exhibition and gallery spaces are on the cards, as are a series of special screening rooms, and an interactive education centre with demonstration labs. Piano enthused: “The design for the museum will finally enable this wonderful building to be animated and contribute to the city after sitting empty for so long.

“I am very inspired by the Academy’s name and mission, the idea of the arts and sciences working together to create films. Our design will preserve the May Company building’s historic public profile while simultaneously signalling that the building is taking on a new life that celebrates both the industry and art form that this city created and gave to the world.”
