Cued by ancient cultures of coastal Mexico, sustainability and design merge with inspiration
Set upon an untouched 33-acre oceanfront peninsula in the Nayarit region of Mexico, Punta Sayulita is an intimate, residential resort development designed to blend with the nearby village of Sayulita. Planned as a hillside village where purpose, views and the pragmatics of drainage and slope, dictate how individual buildings integrate with the land, to feel natural with the intimate bay and valley alongside the peninsula and the scale and fabric of the Sayulita village.
Nature and artistry have converged with a development philosophy that has a triple bottom line approach of sustainability; environmental and community stewardship are equal in measure with profit. With the goal of integrating the project into the site with the least environmental and visual impact, a strong collaborative approach guides the team’s efforts to the planning and design.
This included finding an optimum 'carrying capacity' of the land which resulted in a 62 single-family home maximum for this residential community. Lush hilltops are preserved as common recreational areas where families can gather. Single lane roads help to reduce hillside disturbance and lessen the need for retaining walls. Endemic plantings are being protected and xeriscape landscaping allows for water conservation.
The architectural design for the resort's amenity buildings and homes uses local stone and wood and was inspired by the ancient vernacular of this coastal region's thatched roof palapas. The indigenous architectural style is not compromised to respond to requirements of today’s needs for lifestyle and luxury.
The Beach and Surf Club amenity is designed as the heart of the Punta Sayulita resort, the homes offer privacy, expansive views of the bay and ocean, the Sierra Madre Mountains and the village of Sayulita. The Beach Club and first homes are nearing completion and a tangible 'sense of place' is already apparent within Punta Sayulita.
