The overall redesign and programmatic configuration of the Shanghai World Financial Centre will support the building’s role as a major Asian Landmark and a symbol of the redevelopment in Shanghai. A square prism design (used by the ancient Chinese to represent the earth) is intersected by “cosmic arcs” accentuating the building’s vertical ascent. This geometry is further dramatised by carving a sky portal into the upper levels of the building. Reinforcing the fundamental geometry of the building, the sky portal widens as it rises, topped by a sky bridge that joins the opposite corners of the tower into a single form. The 492 metre tall mixed-use building will not only support the Liujiazui business district but will also provide conference facilities, a 300 room luxury hotel, high-end retail space, restaurants and a 700 m² observation deck on the 101st floor.
