Shorlist for the Highline Competition with the winners announced this week

This week the finalist for the Highline for London competition is to be announced. The shortlist consists of 20 Green Infrastructure designs which were selected from over 170 entries in the competition hosted by the Landscape Institute, Mayor of London and Garden Museum.

The influence for the brief came from New York's Highline project where an unused train line has been redeveloped into a public urban park. The competition aims to enable designers to select certain areas of the forgotten and unused within London which are to be regenerated into new green spaces accessible to everyone. Initial entries included visions for transforming London's underground rivers, flyovers, bus shelters and disused tunnels, creating miniature woodlands, floating parks, subterranean mushroom gardens and green-clad office blocks.

[Y/N] Studio sent us their competition entry, entitled The Lido Line. The project would form a new network for London, by inserting a clean, safe ‘basin' in which to swim. This project is based in the Regents Canal and aims to bring it back to its original purpose, making swimming a viable alternative to cycling or walking to work.

The judges were:
Joshua David and Robert Hammond, Founders of the High Line
Dr. Penelope Curtis, Director of Tate Britain
Johanna Gibbons FLI, Director of J & L Gibbons, Landscape Architects
Kim Wilkie CMLI, Principal, Kim Wilkie Associates, Landscape Architects
Matthew Pencharz, Environment Advisor to the Mayor of London
