Darling Harbour has become the newest addition to the outskirts of Sydney

The project, by Francis-Jones Morehen Thorp has created a new urban space on the edge of the city. Following its transformation from disused docklands, Darling Harbour has rapidly become one of Sydney's key entertainment and most popular tourist areas. However, the south-eastern part has remained under utilised and an opportunity arose to enhance this area through a considered redevelopment.

"We created an office building designed to engage with street life," says Richard Francis-Jones, Design Director of FJMT. "Darling Quarter developed out of a flexible idea that blurred the boundaries between dedicated work spaces and public place, with restaurants, ground floor retail and spaces for children."

The Darling Quarter project provides an innovative mix of commercial and retail functions, children's theatre, integrated public domain improvements and sustainable architecture to enliven the precinct. Through considered integration with the city, the development emphasises the area's viability: not only for tourist and leisure purposes, but as a key part of an expanded CBD, which also offers a diverse range of experiences.

The 6 Star Green Star Office (as built v3 rating) project delivers an international excellence benchmark in sustainability with an emphasis on people in combination with an increase to the area's working population. The project, recently announced as the winner of the Office category at the World Architecture Festival, is an effective mixed-use development, activating and animating the spaces throughout the year.
