Jancina Architekti turn old administrative building into new colourful hotel

In busy centre of Bratislava, close to the main railway station, a new hotel has gone up and contributed to its neighborhood playfulness, variety and jolly colorfulness. The hotel, once used as an administrative building with 6 floors, went through extensive reconstruction.

New parts consisting of 5 floors in the east wing and 6 floors in the south wing have been added on the former administrative building. The aim of the architects was to preserve the existing building with absolutely unsuitable architecture which had to be adapted to hotel utilization. It was necessary to meet strict requirements for functionality and effectiveness of four star hotel and by using fine division of material, apertures and colourfulness make the multiplied volume and complex architectural and interior solution light and airy.

The architecture of the hotel is typical for modern design, pure and simple outlines characterizing exterior as well as interior. Not only the glassed-in parts of interior and exterior or significant use of glass and glassed parts and irregular position of different window apertures are typical for architecture of the hotel. Also the glassed colorful facing with conspicuous colour tone characterizing exterior as well interior used by architects creates interesting contrast with Trespa facing and twotone colour plaster. This led to unique architectural appearance of the hotel which is incorporated in existing built-up area but still conspicuous and perceptible from the distance.

Dominant white colour of the building facade is livened up by colourful accent in the form of glassed panels with engaging linear pattern. Conspicuous entrance hall on the ground floor is directly connected with reception that follows to conference rooms, communication centre, restaurant and administrative part of the hotel. Areas for guests are precisely designed in the way enabling their variable adaptation based on client's needs.

All 175 guest rooms are brightened through large irregularly located French windows. Transparent walls connecting the bedroom part with bathroom are very innovative and interesting. Individuality and character of guestrooms is completed with the Andy Warhol paintings, artist of Slovak origin. Standard of the four star hotel belonging to Mercure group could have been achieved only by difficult combination of reconstruction, extension, superstructure and newly built part and complete ignorance of existing building character from the architectural, disposal and constructional point of view. The architecture, style and character are emphasized by hotel operation providing comfort and modern services.
