IOU realises 'playful' Villa Reimersbeek by extending existing bungalow

IOU Architecture was commissioned to design Villa Reimersbeek, a renovation project which converted a bungalow into a villa by adding an additional floor. This stylish extension cantilevers 2m over the existing building, which the architects describe as ‘giving the whole building more flair'. Underneath the addition a spacious veranda (10 m) has been created, providing a luxurious view southwards facing over the garden and swimming pool.

The architects have described the architectural design as 'flirting with modernism, giving the villa a sense of timelessness'. The playful composition of lines and planes gives the villa a functional appearance whilst pleasing the eye and complementing its surroundings.

A neutral façade has been created through the use of materials such as chalk-white plastering, anthracite wooden window frames, natural stone-like facade of tiles and an oiled wooden entrance. The interior sense of light and airiness is created by the high ceilings and the big glass façade with large sliding doors along the entire South façade.

Each area is well proportioned as the design creates generous spaces, giving the entire interior a feeling of luxury and comfort. The interior design links directly to the facades by the use of wooden frames and doors with the addition of white walls and ceilings.

The villa has three floors. In the basement is a large open multifunctional space with a multitude of possibilities such as a children's play area, a library or studio. On the ground floor is the kitchen, laundry room and pantry, and the large living and dining room that stretch over the entire south facade.

On the top floor are four bedrooms which are connected to the rest of the house by a centrally located staircase at the heart of the house. From the stairwell all floors are clearly visible which gives a good impression of the height of the building.
