Breathtaking images released of AECOM's Masterplan for the Brazil 2016 Olympics
These dramatic masterplan shots and supporting video have been released for the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Park 2016 Masterplan by international firm AECOM. The Holborn, London-based practice was also responsible for the masterplanning of the London 2012 Olympic Games and was credited for its significant role in overseeing the smooth construction and running of the major sporting competition.
Set in over 300 acres of partially developed land in the Barra da Tijuca neighbourhood of Rio de Janeiro, the 2016 Olympic Park will boast 34 sports venues when completed which will host 15 Olympic and 11 Paralympic sports.
Unlike the London event in 2012 and the majority of Olympic Games, the Olympic Stadium for the Rio 2016 Games will not be located within the boundaries of the Park. The opening and closing ceremonies will be held in the existing Maracana football stadium and athletics events split between this and the Joao Havelange Stadium.
Meandering through the Olympic Park is a twisted walkway entitled the Olympic Way, based on the visual of the darker waters of the Rio Negro and lighter waters of the Rio Solomons merging in the Amazon. This swirling pathway will work its way through the Park, enlivened with foliage and gentle landscaping.
A number of the sporting venues are already under construction with some arenas such as the Velodrome and Aquatics Centre being adapted from pre-existing venues. It is thought that temporary venues that will be used during the Games may be transformed post-event into public amenities such as schools.
